Think of your average visit to the South Downs: children running off into the woods to climb trees; Spaniels and Jack Russells roaming free off the lead, walkers marching along the hilltops, carefree and unassuming. It might be one of the most serene, risk-free activities available to a Brightonian, and only a short bus ride away. Sunny days at Devil’s Dyke; long walks along the Seven Sisters trail. A Cultural Comeback: Brighton Hippodrome

There is no doubt Brighton boasts some famous and unmissable attractions: the Palace Pier, the Royal Pavilion, even now, for better or worse, the i360. But many are surprised to hear of a certain landmark, a venue, after so long in the spotlight, eventually left to fall into wrack and ruin. A previous social epicentre that once contributed so significantly to the bustle and hubbub of the vibrant Brighton scene, that still stands over a century later right beneath our noses: Brighton Hippodrome.   Since first stumbling upon it mentioned in a guide-to-Brighton handbook, I’ve taken a certain fascination with the currently derelict building, unable to resist bombarding my friends with its history and its - hopefully - glamorous future each time we pass on our way to and from Hop Poles - sometimes to their surprise and interest (a step back, a glance up, the odd question or two), sometimes to their drunken dismissal. Charleston: A Bloomsbury Group Time Capsule

A train and a bus ride away, a twenty-minute drive, or, if you don’t mind mud, a ten mile walk from Brighton, on the green slope beneath Firle Beacon there lies Charleston House: an old farmhouse that was once home to two of the most influential artists of the 1900s. I consider it a blessing of living in Brighton to be able to, from within the crowded lanes and busy streets of our bustling town, cast our arms out wide over the quiet green of the surrounding country, to special little places like Firle, like Rodmell, like so many spots nestled amongst the South Downs, and claim them as our neighbours. While it may be obvious Brighton itself is well-saturated with British history - architecturally significant monuments, homes of prominent people, rich stories from a different time - it might be lost on many of us that on the hills just outside it there are places of just as significant importance.
